I found out Monday afternoon that I am no longer considered a possible donor for Tyler. Apparently I have 2 small kidney stones in one kidney and 3-4 small stones in the other kidney. I was obviously upset when they told me this because I knew it would disqualify me from donating... but everything happens for a reason. The coordinator said the stones were very small, but I should still see my regular doctor for them just to make sure. So I have an appointment on the 4th of June. I got all of my results in the mail yesterday and was reading through the paperwork. A normal kidney has 1 vein and 1 artery for the blood supply, then one ureter that leads from the kidney to the bladder. I have 2 veins on one of my kidneys. I think this is a common abnormality that causes no problems. But my other kidney has 2 ureters leading to the bladder. (so a total of 3 ureters) I am not sure how common this is or if it could cause any problems. I assume it doesn't cause problems because I've been living with it for 26 yrs and haven't had problems yet, but I will ask my doctor about it next week when I go for the kidney stones.
So, Tyler is back at square 1. There have been a few other people call about possibly donated their kidney to him, but because insurance will only pay for one donor physical at a time, they have not been tested. They might not have given their name to the coordinator, might not to Tyler either, therefore they may not know he is still in need of a kidney. Hopefully one of those people will find out that he still needs one and will contact the coordinator to get the process started.
